We are excited to announce that the Western Canadian Junior B Championships are coming back after a hiatus of 27 years when it was last won by the Richmond Roadrunners in 1995. The Championships had their origins in 1968 when Vancouver Cablevision won the event. Like the original Founders Cup, this current iteration of the event will initially be an invitational tournament with the long-term objective of becoming a true Western Canadian Championship event again between the top teams from each league competing by 2026.
Event Co-Chair Russ Sheppard will be the lead on the rules committee that will help decide player/team qualifications with a separate group that will oversee the team application process. “I am excited to assist Randy Clough and the organizing committee in developing this worthwhile and needed Championships. Adding a Western Canadian opportunity for these young players will assist in growth and further focus on retention of players“ commented Sheppard.
The Western Canadian Junior B Invitational is named the MacDonald Cup after long time BC Junior B Commissioner Fraser MacDonald, who spent over 3 decades as a volunteer and advocate for Junior B Lacrosse in British Columbia. The renamed Invitational, MacDonald Cup will bring together 8 top teams from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba from any Junior B2 leagues not competing for the National Founders Cup Championship. This event will be held in the new Port Coquitlam Community Centre August 9-13, 2023, which will precede the 2023 Founders Cup. The active planning committee has members from all 4 provinces and is looking for volunteers and sponsors to make this a great event. Teams interested in competing in this limited entry tournament will be required to fill out an application form (which will be available January 31st) and submit a deposit by March 1st /2023. The selection committee will announce the final participants by March 28th /2023.
