Brooks, AB to host 2024 Western Canadian Jr. B Invitational

The Chaos Junior Lacrosse Club and its franchise, the Southern Alberta Chaos, are excited to announce that they will be hosting the MacDonald Cup this year. The 2024 event will be hosted in the Centennial Regional Arena in Brooks, Alberta August 7th -11th.

After a hiatus of 27 years, the Port Coquitlam Saints, B.C. successfully hosted the 2023 tournament where the Cranbrook Blackwolves became the first champions of the rechristened MacDonald Cup since 1995. The eight-team event was highly enjoyed by athletes, volunteers, and the numerous lacrosse fans that attended.

“The Chaos organization is relatively new, formed on an emergent basis in 2022 to preserve playing opportunities for Southern Alberta athletes by the collaboration of the Lacrosse Associations from Brooks, Lethbridge, and Taber. A true regional team, the players, coaches, and volunteers come from all over the Southern Alberta region, from south of High River to the US border and east / west from BC to Saskatchewan. That diversity is the cornerstone of Chaos culture; members come together bonded by their passion for and commitment to lacrosse. The Club’s 2024 pre-season planning included an intent to play in the MacDonald Cup — now Chaos contacts, colleagues and friends throughout Southern Alberta have formed an army of volunteers and supporters dedicated to a successful MacDonald Cup played at a premiere venue from the Centennial Regional Arena in Brooks, Alberta . We look forward to hosting teams from our neighboring provinces and creating a great lacrosse experience!” - Mike Medhurst (Club President).

The Western Canadian Junior B Invitational is named the MacDonald Cup after long time BC Junior B Commissioner Fraser MacDonald, who spent over 3 decades as a volunteer and advocate for Junior B Lacrosse in British Columbia. The renamed Invitational, MacDonald Cup will bring together 8 top teams from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba from any Junior B2 leagues not competing for the National Founders Cup Championship.

The Championships had their origins in 1968 when Vancouver Cablevision won the event. Like the original Founders Cup, this current intention of the event will initially be an invitational tournament with the long-term objective of becoming a true Western Canadian Championship event again between the top teams from each league competing by 2026 -27.

Teams interested in competing in this limited entry tournament here will be required to fill out an application form and submit a deposit. There will be 8 teams with two pools of 4, with all teams getting 5 games. Teams being considered to attend are from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
